Denmark Manager: Kasper Hjulmand

Kasper Hjulmand, whose surname fittingly means ‘wheelman,’ demonstrated excellent leadership at Euro 2020. Since securing a title for Nordsjaelland, renowned for their academy, he has promoted skilled youngsters like Rasmus Hojlund. However, Denmark’s World Cup hangover—with two defeats, one draw, and only one goal—could be challenging to overcome.

Denmark’s Star Player: Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen remains Denmark’s most imaginative player. Likely to have overtaken Peter Schmeichel as the second-most-capped Dane by tournament kick-off, the gifted midfielder has also scored nearly as many goals as the rest of the squad combined. Although his club form has dipped, his experience and creativity are invaluable to the national team.

Strengths

Denmark’s team spirit, best shown during the Eriksen episode at Euro 2020, remains a significant strength. Manager Kasper Hjulmand is popular among supporters, players, and the press. The squad boasts an abundance of tournament experience, a solid, stable lineup, and tactical flexibility to switch between a 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 formation.

Weaknesses

Some of Denmark’s stalwarts are struggling and past their prime. Eriksen has slid down the Old Trafford pecking order, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg no longer starts for Tottenham, Thomas Delaney has suffered injuries, captain Simon Kjaer is 35, and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is 37. Each underperformed in Qatar, and things haven’t improved since, with no top-class replacements available.
